A group of mechanical engineering students led by Prof Dr Peter Gust from the school of mechanical engineering and safety engineering at the university of Wuppertal took part in the MultiCopter Cup organised by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) in Hanover and won first place.

As part of the competition, the Wuppertal students - the "DroneLions" - used a drone to fly over components of an aeroplane and a wind turbine in a hall and successfully detected defects such as bird or hail damage. They used a specially modified drone, which has a high-resolution camera and several lasers to assess the size and severity of the damage from the air.

The students' participation in the cup was made possible by sponsors such as Mack-Rides and Wuppertal Stadtwerke.

The VDI MultiCopter Cup is intended to contribute to the further spread of multicopters in research and teaching and to promote the use of multicopter technology in non-destructive material testing and component monitoring in compliance with aviation regulations and procedures.

Students and young scientists from all degree programmes and faculties with a connection to multicopters (small rotor-powered aircraft) were eligible to take part.
