School of Mechanical Engineering and Safety Engineering

Construction theory 1

Position in the degree programme:

Compulsory

Workload:

5 LP / 4 SWS

Type of proof:

Portfolio

Learning outcomes / competences:

The students are able to

  • proceed according to the basic principles of methodical design for initial developments
  • define a list of requirements
  • confidently apply the rules for technical drawing and dimensioning of selected machine elements
  • independently create individual part and assembly drawings including parts lists
  • calculate dimensional chains and define tolerances for dimensions, shape, position and surface

Contents:

  • Introduction to methodical design and development of a first own product
  • Drawing machine elements in orthogonal multi panel projection and axonometry, taking into account the applicable standards (EN, ISO, DIN) for representation and dimensioning
  • Standardised numbers, dimensional tolerances, fits and fitting systems, linear and non-linear dimensional chains, shape and position tolerances and surface tolerances

In addition to the lectures, the basics of design are deepened through group work in the exercises. Technical drawing is taught in several exercises, which students have to complete during the tutorial and in written assignments. Students complete several individual assignments spread over the semester, which are summarised in a portfolio. The type and scope of the individual assignments will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
